Rex and Ayden's Bunk

Her muscles were tight as she paced back and forth in her and Rex's bunk. He said he was coming there but it seemed like he was taking forever. It was probably just a few minutes, but the sight of that poor child and his dead mother was wearing on her. She kept thinking about Brandon and how he was without a mother too.

She jumped a little as Rex arrived and watched with desire as he began to disrobe quickly. It reminded her of when they had first met and when they had forged their relationship. He was so eager then and that hadn't changed.

And why did it turn her on seeing him store his weapons? Must have been a residual thing from growing up in a military background. Let's face it, she equated a portion of Rex's strength to him being a soldier and there she was in her thinking. She watched as he walked to the door and locked it, wearing only his pants.

"I hope you're not too tired love." "I've got a lot of post dramatic stress to release."

He barely got the words out before she collided with him, probably hard enough to solidly push him back against the door. She also probably startled him with her aggressive approach, but it had been so long and they had just reconnected. Her lips were on his, tongue in play right away as her hands worked at his waistband.

"I need to work off some serious stress too..." she whispered between kisses. "And I missed you."

As the others move off to their separate cabins, William Turns back to the bridge console and stares out at the blackness of space. As the last person exits, he shakes his head and puts his face in his two hands, cradling his head as the stress expresses itself in gasping sobs.

The Galiano speeds off into the Black, disruption continues on the Skyplex. One man in particular curses and kicks at the ineffectual minions still laying on the deck before him. "Do not just lay about groaning. I could have you skinned for your incompetence. Would you like that? Sliced and shredded like so much potatoes? It would not be good for my lunch, I believe. Not good for me. Much worse for you, I think." Once he has thoroughly chastised the wounded guards, he turns on his heals and strides away, back to his personal offices.

A short time passes, and back on the bridge, William watches fervently the Wave screen. Finally, he shakes his head and reaches under the side console. Four toggle switches are triggered in a particular order, and a key pops out of a hidden slot. He takes the key, pushes a small panel beneath the navigation panel and slides the key into the exposed slot. Twisting it a quarter turn, he watches the nav comp screen flicker and settle into a new configuration. Selecting from one of the options, he grins, and retracts the key. The nav comp returns to normal display and he pockets the key back into its hidden safe. A dull rumble echoes through the ship; sounds of grinding metal and clanking hydraulics. Once the various noises settled down, he taps the intercom.

"Rex, come up to the bridge, please. Others can join on their own volition."

Siobhán perked up her ears when the sounds of hydraulics and grinding came from the ship. For a moment she was concerned, thought it wasn't at all obvious from her expression which included her trade mark smile, then the Captain spoke over comm, inviting any of the crew who wanted to, to go to the bridge. She had a vague memory of someone mentioning that the ship could be reconfigured and she assumed that that included changing the appearance. Such a change would account for the noises.

"I'm interested in what is going on," she said, and without waiting for an acknowledgement, headed for the bridge.

"From the dreadful racket that's been going on I would have to assume that we have run aground on a reef," Siobhán said brightly as she entered the bridge. "Which is pretty unusual for a space ship, I believe," she added with a smile that stayed on her face.

REX YANGTREE

Rex slid the sleeping Ayden off his shoulder, slipped out from under the leg tossed across his body. He started to dress still watching her.

....

Arriving at the bridge as Siobhan finished. Rex had given no thought to the sounds of the ship, he did not understand the nuances of noises coming from all parts of ships in the black. But once Siobhan had spoken, he figured he'd go with the flow.

"I wondered what was too. Everything alright Captain?"

He moved around the bridge to look around and then out the front window.

Williams nodded to Rex and directed him to the seat starboard of the pilot seat that he occupied. Siobhán moved to stand behind them as they hunched over the console. He switched on the external cameras and ran through the various POVs. The exterior of the ship had changed from that of a bulk trader to an Alliance Patrol vessel. Obvious to their vantage point, various panels had shifted from vertical positioning to now lay flat along the hull. They were now in the ship's original configuration.

"The transponder has also been reset to broadcast an ID that I purchased on the black market of an obsolete AEV that should hold up unless we run into an Alliance cruiser. My concern is that I tried to raise Glory, but there is no response. Not even an acknowledgment to our Wave. I fear she may be in trouble. One of our missions is to back her up in case of conflict. I've coded in the rendezvous coords and we'll be heading there momentarily."

REX YANGTREE

Yangtree was about to ask about the changes in the layout of the consoles when Captain William provide the explanation. Looking at the screens his eyebrows lifted. He'd heard rumors that such technical subterfuge existed but never believed it.

"Holographic imagery?" And the reasons for why he'd never believed. "And some way to counter a non-visual scan? The tech for that was beyond him, but he'd been told. "That requires a lot of power doesn't it?" He looked over at... at.. Siobhan.

"Does this ship have that much of a power generation?" He asked, not really of the small soldier techie. The ship seemed too small, but clearly the Captain was suggesting, no stating, just that.

"A variety of ghost images, a fake responder to a mass detector that responds with a mass return appropriate to the class of ship we are disguised as. False plates and objects on the hull to even give a visual simulation. Of course, we have a limit as to how much we can simulate. No way we can fake a full cruiser, but the difference between a mid bulk freighter and a small patrol vessel, a yacht, or even a heavy shuttle, that's the ranges we have."

He settled back and pushed for hard burn. Stars in the forward screen blued into blurs as the Galiano went hard and fast into the Black.

SONYA GULLIVER

She leaned against the bridge door. Dressed in work out shoes, short shorts and a halter top that wasn't much more than a sports bra. She'd be in the middle of an intense workout and was breathing hard.

"Mighty Shiny Captain. Nice to know about it." she said cynically. They were at war and they had defensive abilities that they were just now learning. "More important I conjure would be just what are we expecting at our rendezvous."

Pilot Gulliver moved to the controls. She looked at the coordinates.
Turning her head, "Ready when you are Captain."

REX YANGTREE

"Glory?" He'd heard of it.
He knew that Gulliver had once been on it based on a conversation. She'd bragged about its adventures, nothing all that unusual for a lightbrained pilot.
"We any idea what we'll be dropping in on?"

"Impressive," Siobhán said as the Captain finished his spiel on the capabilities of the ship. "We could have done with a few ships like this during the war," she thought but didn't say it out loud.

"Very impressive," Siobhán said appreciatively as she looked Sonya up and down and watched with obvious enjoyment as Sonya moved to the controls. It was hard to concentrate with Sonya dressed as she was and in a way she was glad when the back of the pilot's chair hindered her view.

"Settle, girl," she told herself and forced her mind back on to the matter in hand..

"How long until we get to Glory's position?" she asked, wanting to know when she should start getting ready.

Ayden and Rex's Bunk

Ayden stirred in bed and as she became more awake, a smile spread over her face.

"Baby, I sure missed you," she said huskily as she turned to get closer to him.

But she found he wasn't there. And the sheets were cold.

The smile faded quickly into a frown.

She opened her eyes and scanned the room. He was nowhere to be seen. She was disappointed. And a little hurt. So when she was upset, she did the thing she liked to do the best.

Cook.

She got up and slipped on some clothes: a pair of yoga shorts and one of his t-shirts. She threw her hair into a ponytail headed up to the kitchen and stared in dismay at the slim pickens she had to work with.

"We so need to stop and get some groceries soon. There is only so much I can do with protein."

It had been a period of time while the Galiano sped through the Black on its way to rescue Glory. William and Rex manned the bridge as the ship ran on Hard Burn, driving hard toward their destination. William shook his head. "Don't look good. That's the rub. If we come out and they're dead in space, we might get a hook on her for a tow, but we'll be low on fuel as well. If there is something else going on, we'd best be ready for anything."

In the Black, two scavengers were joining their partners in feeding off the dead ship. They were still a short distance away, but their complement of Marines would turn the balance.

Galiano's thrusters were state of the art, still only months old and primed for pursuit. The blips appeared on her scanners well before the scavengers would detect her approach. The proximity alarms echoed softly through Galiano's corridors even as William and Rex were analyzing the readouts.

"That's Glory. Her config was fed into our Nav so we would know her anywhere. There is something adjacent to her, and two others closing. We'll reach her about the same time as they do. Until we get a visual, we won't know if they are hostile or rescue."

He turned to Rex. "Best we're ready for the worse."
